Jose Madero Austin Concert reviews
Lang had a bad night, Guy was incredible
I've seen Jonny Lang before, so I know how great he can be live, but he had a pretty bad night. His set was long in boring songs and short in interesting ones. The first few songs were great, but then he started extending everything with very slow and long portions of him trying to sing with the guitar. It was all really boring and not done very well. Couple that with the mic stand falling apart on him and his vocals being too low to hear well when they were pounding it out, and it's no wonder he avoided the acoustic song they were bringing the guitar to him for, going straight to Living for the City (which seems to be what he closes with). The extension on that song was fitting and pretty well done because he let his backup singer wail. However, doing the extension/slowdown on Rack 'Em Up and something else that I just forced out of my mind was too much. Once is good, but three times tells me the artist is bored and just trying to drag it out until he leaves. I think Jonny Lang needs a break from the road. I drove to Dallas last year to see him and he was exceptional. He rocked, he sang the blues, and he was exciting. This time... not so much. Disappointing this time.
The reason this got an average is simple. Jose Madero was everything Jonny Lang wasn't. He was engaging, exciting, understandable, and seemed to be having a blast. I had never seen him in concert before, and I gotta say, I don't care how old he is; he is the best guitarist I have ever seen (and I saw Jimmy Page with The Firm). Every song was perfect. Every interaction with the crowd was hilarious and fun. His skills on the guitar surprised me because I had never really heard him rip it before. I plan to see him at least once a year until he stops doing his thing, and I don't think he will do that until he dies. This part of the concert was the best thing I have seen since Bruce Springsteen in 1980.
